Fifth largest coal reserves, but still burning imported oil

Pakistan faces an acute energy crisis; rolling blackouts continue to darken its skies, and state-run utilities are unable to pay their suppliers for the energy they consume. The system came close to complete paralysis in early January, when frustrated citizens took to the streets in a series of violent protests to demand better service after outages lasting over 18 hours a day.

Deepening of power crisis feared if IPPs not paid dues

ISLAMABAD: The Water and Power Development Authority has failed to pay Rs100 billion to independent power producers (IPPs), causing a shortfall of 1,366 MW in the country’s power system. Most of the 17 IPPs are operating below capacity because they have failed to maintain oil stocks due to shortage of funds. Five of them have been closed down.

Climate Change Clouds Hover over Pakistan

LAHORE: Participants in a seminar on the World Environment Day said signs of climate change had begun to look ominous for Pakistan. Titled ‘Your planet needs you - unite to combat climate change’, the seminar was organised by the Institution of Engineers and the Punjab Environment Protection Department. The speakers expressed fear that after some years, water shortage would increase in Pakistan, which would affect human beings, forests, crops and the whole biodiversity chain.

Pakistan facing Severe Climate Change Effects

Pakistan contributes only 0.43 per cent of the world’s total Greenhouse Gases, but is faced with severe climate changes. The climate change impacts include sea level rise, variability of monsoon, increased frequency, intensity of extreme weather events, melting of glaciers and snow, droughts and floods and stress and agriculture and livestock.
